The Chicago Bears have reportedly fired head coach Matt Eberflus, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Friday (November 29).
Eberflus' firing came hours after the Bears lost to the NFC North Division rival Detroit Lions, 23-20, concluded with a controversial decision not to call timeout in the game's final seconds. Bears passing game coordinator Thomas Brown will take over as the team's interim head coach, according to Rapoport.
"Sources: #Bears coach Matt Eberflus has been fired after an ugly loss to #Lions, the team’s six in a row. Chicago now has the NFL’s third head coach opening," Rapoport wrote on his X account. "Thomas Brown takes over as the interim coach."
Eberflus' firing also took place hours after he addressed reporters Friday morning, according to ESPN Bears beat reporter Courtney Cronin.
"Just over two hours after the Bears had Matt Eberflus address the media, the team has now fired him. Wow," Cronin wrote on her X account.
Eberflus was hired by the Bears in 2022 after four seasons as the Indianapolis Colts' defensive coordinator. The 54-year-old went 14-32 in three seasons, which includes a 4-8 record in 2024 with five games remaining, with five wins less than both the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.
The Bears finished last in the NFC North Division standings during Eberflus' first two seasons.
