A man died after he was scratched by his pet cat, which caused him to bleed out, the Daily Mail reports.

Dmitry Ukhin, 55, of Russia, who suffered from diabetes and poor blood clotting, suffered a leg bite so severe that it caused a fatal blood loss. Ukhin went looking for his cat on November 22, two days after it ran away from home, and found the pet on the street that evening.

The cat apparently scratched Dmitry's leg so badly that he called his neighbor in fear that he was dying and couldn't stop bleeding.

"Around 11 pm, a man called 112 to report that his friend was bleeding from his leg due to a torn vein," a police source said via the Daily Mail. "The doctors who arrived only confirmed the man's death, which the police received a telephone message about."

The neighbor, who wasn't publicly named, provided first aid to the man and claimed first responders took too long to arrive at the scene, which was confirmed by Ukhin's wife, Natalya, via the Daily Mail. Natalya said the cat, whose name is Styopka, liked to walk by itself and was typically harmless, though its fate after the attack has not been determined.

Forensic experts have not yet determined an official cause of death.
